Spain's World Cup defense, at the underlying-numbers level

One goal conceded gets the headlines. The xG model, the shot-quality data, and the individual defensive numbers underneath it are what actually make this the best defensive campaign a men's World Cup has ever recorded.

Spain conceded once across eight matches, and never trailed at any point in the tournament, not even for a minute. But the number that actually validates the record is the underlying model: opponents were only ever generating 0.3 expected goals worth of chances per match against Spain, the best per-game defensive xG figure recorded by any team across a men's World Cup. That means the one goal they did concede wasn't a defense getting fortunate for seven matches and unlucky in the eighth. The model says the chances allowed were genuinely, consistently minimal.

This is the part a simple goals-conceded count misses entirely. Through six matches, Spain faced just 1.17 shots on target per game, the fewest of any team at a men's World Cup on record since 1966. And the shots they did allow averaged only 0.05 expected goals each, meaning even the chances that got through were low-quality ones, not clear-cut misses. Spain didn't just limit the number of opportunities. They degraded the quality of every opportunity that got through, which is a much harder thing to do consistently than simply parking bodies behind the ball.

Argentina's 0.13 xG in the final is a record low for a men's World Cup final since the metric has been tracked, worse than the total most teams generate from a single half-decent chance. Emiliano Martinez still finished with 11 saves, more than Unai Simon had to make across Spain's entire eight-match tournament combined (10). That single comparison, one goalkeeper's busiest night against another goalkeeper's entire World Cup, is the cleanest illustration of the gap between the two teams' underlying control of the game.

Spain's defensive record isn't built from a deep, compact block. It starts near the opponent's goal: recovering the ball in the attacking third close to nine times per game, second only to Germany at the tournament, while simultaneously controlling the ball more than any other team (66.0% possession). That combination, winning the ball back high and rarely giving it away, is what starves opponents of the possessions they'd need to generate shots in the first place. The 0.3 xG conceded per game isn't a defensive-shape statistic on its own, it's the downstream result of a team that spent most of the tournament preventing opponents from ever building an attack.

The individual numbers back up the team model. Laporte's 11 interceptions trail only Dayot Upamecano's 12 across the entire tournament. Rodri, playing his first major tournament back from an ACL injury, put in 18 tackles, among the top four at the World Cup. And Unai Simon's six sweeper-keeper actions, racing off his line to clean up through-balls, reflect a defense that plays a genuinely high line and needs its goalkeeper to cover the space behind it, a risk that only pays off if the press and the back line ahead of him are doing their job. All three numbers describe the same defense from three different positions on the pitch.

Putting the model together

Four independent data sources point at the same conclusion. The xG model says the one goal conceded was consistent with genuinely elite underlying defense, not luck (0.3 xGA/game, the best ever recorded). The shot-quality data says opponents were forced into worse shots, not just fewer of them (0.05 xG per shot conceded, a joint record low). The territorial data says the suppression started high up the pitch through recoveries and possession control, not a low block. And the individual numbers show that suppression was distributed across the team, not one hero at the back. That's what a World Cup defensive record actually looks like once you go past the goals-against column.
